No. You don't need to be a citizen or resident, nor have a visa, green card or Social Security number, and you don't need to be physically in the country: the process can be done remotely. You will need a registered agent with a physical address in the state, and for non-residents the EIN is obtained by fax or phone with the IRS. Electing S-Corp tax status does require members to be citizens or residents.

In general, online filings take about 1 to 5 business days, while mail filings can take several weeks; some states offer same-day approval or expedited options.
